Antoine
Gaber, known in the scientific community under Antoine Abugaber,
has currently a Membership with the prestigious internationally
renowned American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), Gaber has
been involved in the last 25 years in cancer research and drug
development working mostly within multinational Pharmaceutical
Companies. Gaber, former Associate Member, Interdepartmental Division
of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, and former
Member of the Medical Research & Development Section of the
Canada's Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies (Rx & D),
supported one of his great passions: drug development.
In
the late 1970's, at the beginning of Gaber's career, he had University
teaching assignments at undergraduate (BSc.), graduate (MSc. PhD.)
level in molecular biology, electron microscopy, and research
in oncology at the University of Montreal.
During
his career, Gaber held several important strategic positions in
the Medical Department of several Multinational Pharmaceutical
companies such as: Director of Clinical Operations, International
Clinical Research and Development, and Medical Research Scientist,
in Clinical Research Oncology.
During
that period, Gaber contributed to the co-development of clinical
programme, designed drug development programs, produced clinical
trial plans, and wrote clinical trial reports mostly for oncology
products, which resulted in numerous drug registrations to the
health authorities in several countries. Gaber also contributed
to new product entries in Canada and other countries by generating
clinical trial data (Phase I to IIIb) resulting in the introduction
of several new cancer drugs and indications in breast cancer,
colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, multiple myeloma, and lung
cancer.
In
his scientific career, Gaber directed the activities of over 125
Canadian and international multi-centre (Phase I-IIIb) clinical
trials and pre-clinical projects in tandem with the USA and the
European Medical community. The studies were mostly in the area
of oncology (breast, colorectal, prostate, multiple myeloma, lung,
and ovarian cancer), bone metabolism and in a lesser extent in
rheumatology, cardiology, infectious disease, gynaecology, central
nervous system, dermatology and trauma, with an estimated budget
of 21.3 million $ Can. with the total participation of over 475
clinical research sites within Canada. Gaber
has also written and co-authored several articles and Abstracts
published in Medical/Scientific Journals.
In
2002, Gaber was appointed to the prestigious position of Director
of the Prescription Drug Program and Medicare at the Department
Health & Wellness, at the Government in the Province of New
Brunswick (NB). Gaber was responsible to brief the Premier of
the Province of NB, and Minister of Health, on all issues relating
to Prescription Drug Program (PDP) / Medicare and provide direction
or guidance. Gaber was also responsible to ensure that entitled
health services provided by all physicians, pharmacists and out
of Province hospitals are accessible to the population, and managed
over 29% of the total expenditures / operating cost of the Department
of Health and Wellness for the Province of NB ($1.3 billion Can),
with staff team of 83 people.
