Dr. Pritchard is one of Sunnybrook & Women's best-known academic physicians. Dr. Pritchard graduated from Science (BA (Sci) 1968), and Medicine (M.D. 1971) at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. She trained in Internal Medicine in the University of Toronto Program in General Internal Medicine for three years, at the Wellesley Hospital, the Toronto Western Hospital, and the Toronto General Hospital. She then entered Medical Oncology, spending two years in the University of Toronto Program (Princess Margaret Hospital), and two years as a Research Fellow, first in tumour immunology and melanoma (1973-1974); and subsequently in the area of clinical trials in breast cancer.
Dr. Pritchard joined the staff of the University of Toronto at Women's College Hospital in 1978, and was appointed Head, Medical Oncology and Haematology there in 1984. She was supported for her work in Clinical Trials Research through a Career Award as a Clinical Trials Scholar from the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) from 1978 to 1984. In 1984, she was named Chair of the Breast Cancer Site Group of the NCIC Clinical Trials Group and has served in that role, or as Co-chair, up until the present time.
In 1987, Dr. Pritchard moved to the Toronto-Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre (TSRCC) as Head of Medical Oncology (subsequently Medical Oncology and Haematology) and in 1997 was also appointed Head, Clinical Trials and Epidemiology at TSRCC. She has served as Chair and Cochair of the Breast Cancer Site Group of the Ontario Practice Guidelines Initiative from 1990 through 2002, and in 1998, was also appointed as Clinical Director of the Ontario Clinical Oncology Group. Dr. Pritchard was a founding member of the Canadian Oncology Society (1978) and subsequently their Vice-President (1992-1994). She was also a Founding Member of the Canadian Association of Medical Oncology (1988), and their second President (1990-1992).
Dr. Pritchard has also served as Chair of the Management Committee of the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Initiative, a partnership which funds much of the breast cancer research done across Canada (1999-2002). She currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Current Oncology, Clinical Breast Cancer, and Medscape (Oncology and Women's Health). Dr. Pritchard's interests in clinical trials in breast cancer, in the career development of oncologists, and in the establishment of practice guidelines is demonstrated by these activities, and by her over 250 publications, and many invited lectures across Canada, North America, and Internationally.
Dr. Pritchard's major areas of interest include:
· Multicentre clinical trials; design, conduct and analysis · Adjuvant therapy for breast cancer · Correlative and translational research in breast cancer · Tumour tissue data banking · Predictive and prognostic factors in breast cancer · Hormonal therapy for breast cancer · Menopausal symptoms and their effect on quality of life in women with a diagnosis of breast cancer. · The role of hormone replacement therapy in women with a diagnosis of breast cancer
